A SHORT LOOK AT EACH YEAR
1950 – The Beginning
One fine day in late 1949 four young men stood quaffing ales in the front bar of the Travellers Rest Hotel (aka Travs). Patrick Murphy, Robert (Bob) Naylor and the Gatehouse brothers, Brian and Colin, wanted to play soccer for the University. The only problem was that there was no registered University team playing in either of the two soccer divisions that existed at that time.
Young men are renowned for overcoming insignificant problems and it was soon decided to start their own team and register to play as the University side. And so they went ahead and organized for a side to play in the Second Division of the Tasmanian Soccer Association and looked around amongst the students for players.
A difficult task but young men are renowned for overcoming insignificant problems and indeed players were found. The first game was played on Saturday the 15th April 1950 where Brian Gatehouse scored our first goal by neatly slotting home a penalty in an ignominious defeat to South Hobart with a score line of 15-1 down.
An ignominious start but the enthusiasm, that was to continue to follow the University team, was undiminished. The organisers of the team rifled through old student registrations to find people who had indicated that they wanted to play soccer. Someone rang Fred Joughin at his workplace at Dobson Mitchell & Allport. Fred was keen to play and from game two he began his long TUSC career.
Some of the early players were Fred Joughin, who was a graduate and working full time, Reg Wright was a footballer who gave away lots of free kicks when he grabbed players trying to pass him, Alf Knowlan was a fireman and Malcolm Searle was a New Zealander. On occasion rugby players were also drafted to make up the numbers. It wasn’t easy this first year but we survived.
We see that the mix of people at the start was of students, staff, overseas players and some working individuals and that mix has remained much the same over the last sixty years.
The team only won two of its 12 roster games but Jimmy Kwong, argueably the best half-back at that time, won the Tasmanian Soccer Federation - Best & Fairest ‘B’ Grade award.
The Club’s first winning game was on Saturday 17 June 1950 defeating Mt Nelson 2-1. It was the tenth game of soccer played by the Club.
With only 11 goals for and 50 against several severe losses occurred but none as bad as the first game.
As Olympia withdrew from the competition during the season technically University came in second last but let’s be honest it was actually last!!
1951 – THE GAME GOES ON
With basically the same set of players the Club struggled on in Second Division again this year managing to win only one roster game on Saturday May 12 when we defeated Titan 3-2.
The worst defeat I could find was in May when Metro beat us 7-0 but most games were reasonably close and although we lost all but one game players were gaining experience.
We scored 14 goals and let in 51, a slightly better average than 1950.
New players this year were Goddard and Tatnell, who both only stayed one season, Gordon Latham who managed to play on for all his three years at Uni.
With soccer still a minor sport and poorly regarded by newspaper writers there was not a lot of information about Second Division games in the Mercury Newspaper.
The camaraderie of the players was growing and Harry Coleman, Fred Joughin, Andrew McGinn, Patrick Murphy and Robert Naylor formed a core of players and committee men that guided the Club well into the late fifties.
1952 – THE AGONY CONTINUES
Paul Angel, David Cutlan, Gerald Stanley and Ernie Verrall started playing this year and all four stayed for a number of years strengthening the player list and helping the stalwarts who were already doing much for the Club.
However, once again, we won only one game and scored only 14 goals while letting in 60 goals. We finished at the bottom of the 2nd Division again.
In our game on Jun 16 against South Hobart Aubrey Briggs managed to score our sole goal and then proceeded to get injured. He suffered a badly cut eye and had to receive hospital treatment. Undeterred the rest of the players forged on to an ignominious 7-1 defeat.
We got a bit of a beating this year with several seven v not much defeats and a few 5 nils as well. We did manage to draw a Knock out cup game 4-4 against Waterside Workers but they pasted us 6-1 in the replay.
In the early 50’s at the end of the season International Games were played. This is because the Cup games were mostly for the First Division teams. The England team included three University players who were Fred Joughin, Collins and John Hartley.
An old photo still exists and it can be seen in the Photos section of this site.
1953 – MORE AGONY
Very few new players came along this year and none who stayed for any length of time but we still managed to field a team each week. However for the second year in a row we finished the roster season at the bottom of the 2nd Division ladder.
We managed to win only two games and scored twelve goals while letting in 62, which was about average number of goals scored against us at the time. Counting Cup games David Potter scored four goals this year to be our top goalscorer.
Defeats were heavy again with two 7-0’s, two 6-1’s and four games where five goals were scored against us.
At the end of the season we combined with the Black Bears team to play a friendly against the Zinc Works. Also at the end of the season the traditional International games were played and several of our players took part including John Loder and Fred Joughin
1954 HAT TRICK
New players were thin on the ground again and the old stalwarts kept the team on the park each weekend. We managed to come at the bottom of the 2nd Division for the third year in a row thus achieving our first hat-trick – three wooden spoons in a row.
Our attack managed to score 13 goals but our defence proved more solid this year only letting in 55. Another year that was pretty much par for the course with heavy defeats of 8-1, 8-0, 6-2 and two 5-0’s. But these were the only five really bad results the other games being much closer so it seems that our players were starting to build together into a force.
1955 THE JOY OF WINNING
Once more few players came to stay for an extended period and the years of playing together came to fruition this year as we managed to finish in fourth position in a 2nd Division of six teams.
After three years in which he only scored two goals, Gerry Stanley went berserk this year scoring 23 goals out of 33 and the defence clamped down only letting in 40. So we managed to win half of our sixteen games (that’s eight winning games) and drew one as well. Our first season with double figure roster points – we got 17 points overall.
We only had one large defeat early in the season that being 6-0 against Kingston and then we had our, up to then, largest win of 7-2 against Warrane in which Gerald Stanley scored 5 goals. Most of the other games were reasonably close and we seemed to manage to score goals almost every week.
This year saw Don Clarke play for this season only. The remarkable thing about Don was that he only had one full arm. His right arm was but a stub. All the same he played all season and thoroughly enjoyed himself. See his picture in the 50’s photos on this site.
The end of the season International games saw Gerald Stanley play for the England team.
Fred Joughin was Southern Tasmanian Soccer Association secretary and he left Hobart for Burnie in August this year.
Two players left the Club after five years of service and they were Andrew McGinn who played 109 games and scored 5 goals, Robert Naylor after 79 games and 0 goals.
1956 WHOOPS
New faces this year were Eddie Blundstone, Andrew Mudaliar, John Nicholson, Peter Noar, Sursen Singh and Robert Surendra. John Nicholson has gone on to become the second longest stayer at the Club.
Despite the recruitment of some talented players the Club once more scored the wooden spoon in 2nd Division. We won only one game and drew another. The forwards only managed to score eight goals while the defence let in a whopping 82 goals. It seems that the influence of Fred Joughin was deeply missed.
Two 10-0’s, two 7-1’s, a 7-0, two 6-1’s and a 5-1 were the worst beatings we took this year. Things got so bad that we even forfeited one game to South Hobart on the 25th June. On September 15 we nearly won a Falkinder Cup match but just lost out 2-1.
Most of the games were played at the Bell Street ground where the Hockey grounds now are situated.
1957 SUCCESS AT LAST
Kamal Dutta, David Groves and Robert Singh were new faces this year and Fred Joughin came back to Hobart to play the last third of the season.
2nd Division this year only had four teams but we managed to come a distant second to South Hobart No 2. The forwards put away 33 goals and the defence had an outstanding year only letting in 39. We won nine of the eighteen roster games.
South Hobart defeated us 7-2, 5-3 and 5-2 during the roster season and these were the worst defeats for the season.
The best was to come at the end of the season but under unusual circumstances. We actually lost the semi-final 2-0 to Croatia. However we protested over misconduct and although one University and one Croatia player were suspended we were also awarded the game. We then went on to win the Knockout Cup final for Division Two and beat South Hobart No2 3-1. Our first official trophy!
One player left the Club after eight years of service and that was Patrick Murphy Snr. who played 133 games and scored 0 goals.
1958 TWO TEAMS
Aslam Buksh, Haresh Chandra, William Goodhand, Amrat Lal and Bas Deo Prasad began playing this year. William (Bill) Goodhand was a lecturer at the University and went on to Captain and Coach the Club.
For the first time we fielded two teams and they were named University No 1 and University No 2. Both teams were in the six team 2nd Division and Uni No 1 finished second while Uni No 2 finished sixth (i.e. last). The first game of the season saw Uni No 1 play and defeat Uni No 2 with a score line of 6-2.
Uni No 1 won 8 games and drew 3. The forwards scored 35 goals and the defence only let in 24 goals. The first year that goals for were better than goals against.
Uni No 2 lost all 14 roster games scoring only 5 goals and letting in 64.
University, who won the cup for the second year in succession, owed their win to a corner in the first half of the second period of extra time and a splendid display by their Fijian players Mudaliar, Sursen Singh, Surendra and Prasad. We defeated ANM by a corner after being 1-1 at the end of the second period of extra time.
This must have been some minor consolation for the Uni No 2 team as ANM had defeated them 18-0 back on the 28th June.
1959 BACK TO ONE TEAM
New players this year included Jo Borg, Douglas Clarke, Peter Groves, Cameron Leslie, Peter Leverett, Tom Steen and Arnold Volfrans.
Uni No 1 and Uni No 2 played this year in a seven team 2nd Division
Uni No 1 won five games and drew three managing to finish 2nd last. The forwards scored 31 goals and the backline kept the opposition to a modest 48 goals.
Uni No 2 won 50% of their games however they only managed to play two games. The Uni No 2 team folded after the second game because a number of Fijian players who drank at the Arcade Hotel started up the Arcadians team and so left University short of players.
The first team finished the season on a high when they were 2nd Division Knock Out Cup runners up when City United def University No 1. Scores were 1-1 at full time but City United scored 3 corners in extra time to win.
Players who left the Club were Paul Angel after eight years of service and who played 143 games and scored 1 goal, Harry Coleman after nine years of service and who played 156 games and scored 1 goal, David Cutlan after five years of service and who played 128 games and scored 5 goals, John Hill after 5 years of service and who played 113 games and scored 0 goals, Gerald Stanley after 8 years of service and who played 145 games and scored 38 goals.
1960 SUPER SUCCESS
Signing on this season were Peter Imlach, Jeffrey Jennings and David Meech.
We only had the one team this year which remained in the six team 2nd Division but at last success came and we won the division. We won nine games and drew three while scoring 39 goals and only letting in 24 goals.
Only 14 roster games were finished as this was a particularly wet season and a lot of early season games were postponed and never replayed. We lost one game to Rangers, who were in the 1st Division, 10-0 in a Cup game but apart from the 6-1, 5-1 and 5-0 victories most of the other games were a win or loss by one or two goals.
Much discussion ensued amongst the players as to whether the Club should exercise its right and move up into the higher division next year. In the end a democratic vote saw the majority of players decide to take the opportunity and move into the 1st Division.
Fred Joughin was delighted with the success and he told the newspaper reporter that the following players contributed to the University triumph. J Nicholson, A Mudaliar, A Surendra, D Groves, R Milton, J Blundstone, M Share, Raja Ram, Aslam Buksh, Amrat Lal, W Goodhand, Haresh Chandra, A Pillay, D Wakefield, A Raza, R & T Singh, E Verrall.
Fred also found himself on a number of Tasmanian Soccer Association committees sorting out various problems throughout the year.
Players who left the Club were Ali Mumtaz after 4 years of service and who played 76 games and scored 1 goal, Sursen Singh after 4 years of service, 76 games and 0 goals, Peter Tracey after 4 years of service, 96games and 0 goals.
1961 FIRST DIVISION AT LAST
New players registered this year did not stay around for any length of time.
The University Oval was used for the first time for a limited number of games.
Our first year in the 1st Division saw the first team with a creditable fifth place finish in a seven team division. The lads won five games and drew another but losing eight games for a season total of 11 roster points. Goals scored for were 29 and the back line let in 54.
Our first game in 1st Division was the WD & HO Wills Gold Cup first round against Juventus who defeated University 9-3 but Aslam Buksh scored a hat trick with a field goal and two penalties. The University Club received 27 pounds 6 shillings for its efforts in this Cup competition.
It was the opening of the roster season in Southern Tasmania and University, though weakened by the absence of several regular players and facing a two goal deficit, fought back to beat Metro 3-2 after crossing over 1-2 down.
Roster wins were hard fought and there were several beatings such as losses to Rapid 8-0 and Rangers 6-1. But the season was not without highlights such as a defeat of Caledonians 6-4 after trailing 1-3. This game, in June, saw the debut of Franz Hadorn who played a big part in the victory. An over-confident Juventus were set back on their heels by an early goal by University who had only 10 men on the field when Aslam Buksh crashed in their first goal. We went on to a 1-1 draw. Other games saw a 7-2 defeat of Metro where Aslam Buksh scored another hat trick and a 7-2 defeat of South Hobart.
The 1st team managed to do well in the Falkinder Cup being defeated 8-3 by Caledonians in the final.
As required to be allowed to play in 1st Division we also had a reserves side which ended the season last of seven teams. Won 2, drew 2 and lost 10 to end on 6 roster points. The forwards scored 18 goals but the defence let in 73 goals.
Lowlights of the Reserves season were defeats to South Hobart 6-0, Olympia 11-0 in the Cup and Juventus 8-0. But a big win of 7-2 against Croatia towards the end of season cheered the boys up no end.
Being in 1st Division increased the media attention and a lot more articles appeared in the newspapers. Players got their name mentioned and the Clubs’ style of play was under the microscope.
On the 29th April the University v Croatia roster game was abandoned in the 25th minute by referee Bert Hudson when University was leading 1-0. The action arose out of an assault on referee A Hudson by Croatian players and a near riot by the Croatian supporters at the University oval at Sandy Bay. (Full report can be seen in the 1961 year data file on this site.)
Franz Hadorn, the young Swiss star from Berne, secured State selection in his first season and was the first University player to gain this honour.
Fred Joughin was secretary of the Tasmanian Soccer Council.
Players who left the Club were Aslam Buksh after 4 years of service and who played 77 games and scored 40 goals, A Horne after 4 years of service, 77 games and 0 goals, Raza Ahmed after 4 years of service, 77games and 1 goal, Robert Singh after 5 years of service, 95 games and 0 goals, Ernie Verrall after 10 years of service, 182 games and 2 goals, Dennis Wakefield after 4 years of service, 77games and 0 goals.
1962 YEAR OF DISAPPOINTMENT
New players this year were Robin Baigent, David Esling, Keith Fuller, Hume Moase, Michael Nicholson, Rudi Rajic, Paul St John and Hans Steen.
The 1st Team remained in the now ten team First Division but due to several of last years stars moving to other Clubs for match fees only struggled into last position. We only won 1 roster game, drew another and lost 16 games. The forwards could only slot home 18 goals while the defence let in 99 goals so we ended with only three points. So with only 3 points we came dead last.
We were beaten by Olympia 5-1 in the first game and the season went downhill from there. Defeats by Rangers 10-0 in the 2nd game, Croatia 8-1 in the 3rd game until finally some relief with a draw 3-3 in game 4 after coming from 1-3 behind. Then the defeats continued with Juventus 9-2, Caledonians 6-1, Rapid 6-0, Wayatinah 8-2, South Hobart 8-0, Olympia 5-1, Rangers 5-0, Croatia 4-0. Then at long last on 7 July we defeated Metro 2-1 for our only win. Then more grief Calies 9-4, Wayatinah 6-1, Rapid 7-1 but over the last six weeks games were closer showing that the Uni spirit still burned bright.
Cameron Leslie starred in goal all season getting several newspaper mentions praising his prowess and how he kept the scorelines down.
The Reserves were in the in a ten team Reserves League but could only manage to come ninth. They won 3 roster games and drew 4 but lost 12 outright. The forwards banged in 29 goals but the defence let in 76 and the team ended with 10 roster points.
The Reserve side started the season with fairly small defeats and a few draws but as the season drew on defeats became more serious such as Olympia 6-0, Juventus 5-2 and 4-0, Caledonians 11-1, Rapid 9-0 and Wayatinah 8-1.
The Reserves finished the season with a rush by making the semi-final of the Doug Slater Reserve Cup where Calies defeated Uni Reserves 7-2.
Players who left the Club were Haresh Chandra after 5 years of service and who played 97 games and scored 0 goals, Kamal Dutta after 6 years of service, 116 games and 2 goals, Andrew McGinn after 10 years, 167 games and 5 goals, Andrew Mudaliar after 7 years of service, 140 games and 2 goals, Peter Noar after 7 years of service, 139 games and 0 goals, Michael Share after 5 years of service, 97 games and 0 goals, Robert Surendra after 7 years, 138 games and 15 goals.
1963 THE YEAR OF THE FAIREST TEAM
New comers for the season were Abu-Hassan Izri (Hasan), Graham Burton, Donald Butler, David Duncan, David Edwards, John Morse, Harry Pauntu, David Rayner, Pat Sililo, Ian Weeks.
The Club dropped back to 2nd Division and the two teams were named Uni No 1 and Uni No 2 again.
Uni No 1 In a six team Division the first team won 14 games and drew 2 ending with 30 points only 1 point behind the winner, White Eagles. The forwards rammed home 85 goals and the solid defence only allowed 23 against.
The whole year was a struggle between White Eagles, Uni No 1 and Dnipro for the title.
We were runners up in the 2nd Division Knock Out Cup losing the final as White Eagles defeated Uni No 1 5-2. The Tasmanian Soccer Association awarded University the Polish Cup Trophy for the fairest team in the division.
Uni No 2 The reserves won 2 games and drew 2 ending the season with 6 points. The forwards managed a bare 28 goals while the lack of defence allowed 93 to be scored against. The problems they faced was highlighted on 10 June when holidays depleted the player stocks and the Reserves had to forfeit a Cup match due to lack of players.
Top goalscorers were Geoffrey Jennings and Adrian Harmsen with 16 apiece. Geoff scored 5 in his first game, a hat trick next game and another hat trick in his third game the next week.
This year the first annual dinner was held at the Beach Hotel.
Players who left after this season were Edward Blundstone after 8 years of service and who played 165 games and scored 0 goals, Amrat Keshaw Lal after 6 years, 120 games and 10 goals, Bas Deo Prasad after 5 years, 101 games and 0 goals, Hugh Price after 5 years, 101 games and 0 goals, Rajic Radmilla after 101 games and 0 goals.
1964 BACK ON TOP
New players this year included Graham Burleigh, Ajit Prasad and Christopher Steeholt.
This year the Club remained in 2nd Division with two teams.
Uni No 1 With very few new players this year the first team knew each other well and success came with the eight team 2nd Division league title. They did this by winning twelve games, drawing 1 and losing only 1 to end with 25 points, 2 points clear of Dnipro No 1. The forwards put in 69 goals and the solid defence only allowed 16 past. They won the first 12 games in a row then came the draw and the loss came at the end of the season. So we were invited to move into the 1st Division next season.
Uni No 2 The Reserves also improved their last year’s roster place by finishing 3rd bottom as opposed to second bottom. They won 4 games but lost ten. The forwards scored 33 goals and the defence let in 52 so they accounted themselves well without much success.
In the second round of the 2nd Division Knock Out Cup Uni No 1 played a two hour game against Dnipro No 1. The final score was 3-3 but Dnipro had managed to get a corner in the last period of extra time. Everyone thought Dnipro had won but the executive ruled that corners were not to have counted and the game was replayed. Dnipro won the replay 2-1.
Much debate was had over whether the Club should move into 1st Division next year and a vote of players resolved that we would go up a Division.
Players who left after the season were Peter Legge after 6 years of service and who played 119 games and scored 4 goals and Ingvar Nilsson after 6 years of service, 119 games and 13 goals.
1965 BACK IN THE BIG TIME
New players coming to the Club this year were Malcolm Boyle, Peter Cloudsdale, David Duncan, Howard Gomer, Alec Kotcharian, Michael Robinson, Geoffrey Smith, Peter Stevens, Robert Sugden, Colin Sumner, Philip Sumner and Denis Whitchurch.
Up into First Division again this year for the first team and for the first time we field three teams. The Gold team makes its debut and the infamous Grads team has its first outing this year. This team goes on to be an institution within the Club for whom the honour of playing for is as great, if not greater, than playing in the first team.
University first team Coached by Jim Gracie the team managed to finish in second last spot in a ten team division. They lost the first game 8-0 and they only won two games and draw another to end up with 5 points. The forwards managed to score 31 goals but the defence leaked and 91 goals were scored against. So we go straight back down to the lower division after only one season but with a ton of experience to call upon.
Uni Gold This team, who were really the reserve team, played in a seven team competition and finished a creditable third. Led by the captain, Robin Baigent, they won 10 games and drew 2 more to finish with 22 points. The forwards banged in 57 goals and a tight defence only allowed 34 against. Uni Gold’s centre-forward, Rudy Rajic, netted seven of his sides thirteen goals against Croatia in 2nd Division in his 1st game for University for two seasons. Gold were also runners up in the Knock-Out Cup losing the final to Juventus 1-2.
Uni Grads Playing in a six team competition the Grads also finished a creditable third. Led by the captain, John Nicholson, they won 7 games and drew another 1 to finish with 15 points. The forwards scored 46 goals but the defence was a little loose and let in 56 goals.
Players who left after the season were Raymond Milton after 8 years of service and who played 160 games and scored 10 goals and Paul St John after 4 years of service, 83 games and 0 goals.
1966 YEAR OF CONSOLIDATION
New players this year were Len Armsby, Jack Atkinson, Keith Boyle, Michael Cassidy, Geoffrey Kitchen, Guy Nicholson, Leon Peck, Michael Scavone, Petrus Smith, Michael Sugden and Stewart Taylor.
Three teams again this year with Uni No 1 and Uni Gold in Metropolitan Division 1 and Uni Grads in Metropolitan Division 2.
Uni No 1 Playing in a seven team division the firsts won eight games and drew one to finish third with 17 points. The forwards scored 39 goals but the miserly backline only let in 9.
Uni Gold Winning only one game and drawing another this team finished last with a mere three points. Forwards scored 11 but the backs let in 56.
Uni Grads Playing in an eight team division the Grads won one game and drew another. They also managed to have to forfeit two games so ended up seventh. The forwards scored nine but the backline conceded 62.
After the roster games both Divisions had an end of season round robin tournament called the King Cup. Uni Gold did not play in the competition. Uni No 1 came 4th out of seven teams. Grads came last of six teams.
On 21 May 1966 - Uni No 1 lost its first game this year and Grads won their first game this year!!
Players who left after this season were Anthony Hocking after 6 years of service and who played 121 games and scored 13 goals, Peter Leverett after 8 years of service, 157 games and 30 goals, David Meech after 7 years of service, 139 games and 1 goal, Charles Pallaghy after 6 years of service, 119 games and 51 goals and Arnold Volfrans after 8 years of service, 158 games and 6 goals,
1967 A YEAR OF SUCCESS
Players who joined this year were Rupert Badcock, Peter Johnson, Joseph McGhee, Raja Ram, John Sloane and Michael Thompson.
We only had two teams this year being University and Uni Grads.
University Playing in an 8 team Metropolitan Division 1 the firsts came second this year. Winning 14 games and drawing one out of 20 played to end up with 29 points. The forwards scored 59 goals and the defence let through 31 goals. The firsts won the Knock-Out Cup, on the toss of a coin, guessing correctly to beat Metro who won the Division title.
Uni Grads Playing in the 8 team Division 2 Grads came fourth. They won 9 games and drew 2 others to end with 20 points. The forwards scored 56 goals and the defence let in 42 goals.
Players who left after this season were Abu Hassan Hizri after 5 years of service and who played 105 games and scored 17 goals, Harry Pauntu after 5 years of service, 106 games and 7 goals, Rudi Rajic after 5 years of service, 110 games and 33 goals and Pat Sililo after 5 years of service, 106 games and 47 goals.
1968 OPPORTUNITY LOST
Players who joined this year were Frank Doedens, Leslie Jackson, Geoffrey Kitchen, Edmund Mtwali, Edward Parr and Rajendra Prasad.
We returned to having three teams this year. This was because University accepted an invitation to join the Southern Premiership League. They will fill the vacancy caused by the withdrawal of Rangers
University Playing in the 8 team Southern Premier League Uni came last not winning a game but drawing four to end on four points. The forward scored 11 but the defence let in 52. So back down to Metropolitan Division 1 next year. Darn!
Uni Gold Playing in the 8 team Metropolitan Division 1 Gold finished fifth by winning eight games and drawing three to end on 19 points. The forwards scored 43 goals and the defence kept goals against to 43.
Uni Grads Playing in the 6 team Metropolitan Division 2 Grads finished fourth by winning five games and drawing one to end on 11 points. The forwards scored 30 goals but the defence slept while 85 were banged past them. Despite the poor defence Grads won the Division Two Knock Out Cup also known as the Les Smith Cup - Uni Grads defeated Dnipro 3-0.
Players who left after this season were Douglas Clarke after 10 years of service and who played 211 games and scored 1 goal, Keith Fuller after 7 years of service, 148 games and 4 goals, Hans Steen after 7 years of service, 144 games and 4 goals and at least three players were required to undertake national service for two years and saw combat in Vietnam.
1969 EXPERIENCE BREEDS SUCCESS
Players who joined us this year included Jeffrey Atkinson, Tom Ballantyne, William Donovan, David Enright, Greg Middleton and Robert Willink.
Three teams again but Uni Gold and Uni Grads were in the same league this season.
University Playing in the eight team metropolitan Division 1 the firsts used their experience to win 17 games, draw 3 and lose only one to finish on top of the league with 37 points. The forwards blasted away 74 goals while the tight defence only let in 15. It took until the 14th June before the firsts lost a point.
