g Intervarsity Carnivals

Intervarsities are generally the closest thing to a Bacchanalian festival that the average sportsman or woman is likely to witness during his or her lifetime. Tales of wild drinking and constant cavorting are legend in most sports but rarely does this aspect supercede the more important aims of performing well and mixing in a large group with common interest. (1974 Sports Council Handbook)

Intervarsity Carnivals commenced in 1928 (Soccer Carnivals started in 1947) and attendance at one, or more, is fully recommended.

The following is what can be found of the history of IV’s attended by the Club.

“Chaperone”/Coach Frank Watson - Hard & humid. Bottles of Resches D.A. (Oh what piss!) and fantastic accomodation at the Cross. The first touch for many of our freshers. Frigate rum and a ten foot hole - blackmail tapes. A certain captain slept through a strip show (enough, enough the poor man cried). trying to drink the CHEN Cup. Friday night after the presentations at the Banana-Benders hotel with a forest of bottles and many sick bods. Early hours of the morning challenging Everton in sobriety tests around the El Alemain Fountain. What a send off - Jack hammers at 5.00am outside the hotel in resonance with our sore heads.

NSW def TAS 4-2, SYDNEY def  TAS 7-0, ADELAIDE def TAS 6-2

In Sydney the grounds were hard, temperatures high, shirts uncomfortable and the standard of soccer considerably higher than in the Southern Tasmanian Second Division. Furthermore the team was bracketed with Sydney, NSW and Adelaide in the more difficult group. In The first match against NSW tragedy struck with the score at 2-2 and the side really getting into its stride. Charlie Pallagh, playing at centre-forward seriously damaged an ankle and took no effective part in the rest of the competition. The ten remaining players hung on grimly, finally losing by two late goals. Further injuries that night and in succedding matches put at least five members of the team out of action and the remaining games were well lost. Nevertheless a good time was had by all.

An odd moment occurred when Keith (Frigate) Fuller claimed he had fallen into a five foot hole in Kings Cross when in actual fact he had slipped off the kerb and sprained his ankle.

INTERVARSITY REPORT written by Peter Leverett

In 1964 Sydney was the venue for the Intervarsity Soccer with eight teams participating; A.N.U. and W./A. being noncompetitors.

The teams were: Division A - Sydney, Adelaide, U.N.S.W., Tasmanioa. Division B - Melbourne, Brisbane, U.W.E.

with the two top teams (after three days soccer) in each Division to play off the semi finals and then the final. The result was a 3-1 victory to Melbourne over Adelaide after an interesting and hard game, in which fortunes changed rapidly but always seemed to favour Melbourne.

After this game the Combined Varsities side was chosen, unfortunately no Tasmanians were named but almost certainly one or two of our lads would have come into consideration had they not been injured early in the piece.

We acquitted ourselves quite well and gained much admiration from all the other teams by our efforts in fielding a well dressed and determined team every match even though dogged constantly by injuries. In fact when we opened the scoring in the first five minutes against Adelaide many eyebrows were seen to rise (especially those of Des Geary!); however as was generally the case, in the second half our lack of cohesion began to tell although our general fitness stood up to the test.

It must be said that the estremely hard grounds and thw warm somewhat humid conditions took a heavy toll on the stamina and I do feel these were major factors. The same sort of conditions will probably be encountered in Adelaide in 1965 and therefore the ball must be made to do the work rather than the man.

The week was also notable for the variety of social occaisions all of which naturally included beer, women and Frank Watson. And here let it be said that Sydney really did a fine job and made the week hum very smoothly and of course some of us who attended the 1963 Melbourne Intervarsity were able to renew old acquaitances such as Bil MacGillivray and Danny Economore from Sydney, Ian Doherty from Queensland and Des Geary from Adelaide.

The social side of the week may be briefly recorded (evenings only mentioned). Tuesday:- Barbecue, food and grog provided. Wednesday:- Ferry Cruise from Circulay Quay. Thursday: Free Night (generally flicks or a strip-show). Friday:- Presentation dance (everything provided). Saturday:- Seperate club celebrations and a final fling!. Sunday:- going home.

On the friday night Tasmania received the Chen Cup for “Appearance and Sportsmanship” (a four bottle job) which was painfully christened by Leverett, Baigent and Fuller after they had emerged from under the table with Bill MacGillivray and a couple of Queenslanders. Keith Fuller still maintains to this day that we defeated Melbourne in the boat race that night but the decision is forgotten and the vision blurred by many re-runs.

1965 in Adelaide will be just as good!

1965 ADELAIDE - those of you who missed this I.V. need their heads reading.

ORGANISING COMMITTEE - David Rayner

The cheerful greeting of Des turned to utter hatred when only two hours off the plane on Sunday, we beat Adelaide 3-2. Warm weather and plenty of warm birds. The sweet grog in the sweet “Australian Bushland setting”. The Barossa valley - after this we drink only Orlando wines. A tssty pig. Jonny Agars good voic. Sex near the rex. Finished third but swam in first.

INTERVARSITY 1965 written in 1966 by Peter Leverett

I have been asked to write a report of the golden days of last year’s Intervarsity and so here it is as I remeber it through the mist of time and alcohol.

The 1965 competition was held in Adelaide with a record ten teams participating. The teams were split into the following divisions: Division 1: Adelaide, Sydney, New England, A.N.U., Tasmania. Division 2: Melbourne, Queensland, N.S.W., W.A., Monash.

After arriving in Adelaide at 12:30 on the Sunday we played Adelaide at 2:00 and created the biggest stir of the week by convincingly defeating them 5-3. Pallaghy and Leverett scored two goals each with Hasan scoring the remaining goal after just missing with two crashing drives.

The scene was thus set, people talked of little else for days and on the Monday and Tuesday we Defeated A.N.U. and U.N.E., convincingly I felt, by 3-0 and 3-2 respectively. However the game against Sydney on the Thursday was played in poor conditions with a very heavy ball and we lost 1-5 but were by no means disgraced.

Thus for the first time in history Tasmania had entered the semi-finals and on Friday morning newcomers W.A. were outplayed by the now renowned Apple Isle football machine, the result, a 4-2 win.

The overall placings were 1. Sydney, 2. Melbourne, 3. Tasmania.

Turning to the other side of things, I feel that this I>V> was the best we have attended; not only were the matches well organised and refereed but the social side of the week ran very smoothly with great success. One feels, therefore, that great credit must be given to the Adelaide boys especially to Des Geory who masterminded the whole venture.

Extra curricula activities (vide supra) enjoyed or negotiated during the week can, I think, be summarised:-

Sunday: Party at Woodville, “x” grog and girls provided (Fuller and Leverett stll maintain they are innocent.)

Monday: Cabaret, more free grog and skirt.

Tuesday: Barbecue at Waterfall Gully, preceeded bya trip to Windy Point for a view of the city lights (and other things).

Wednesday: All day trip through the Barossa Valley, including the Orlando (free wine) and Seppelt wineries, followed by a barbecue lunch at Hoffman’s.

Thursday: Free night before finals. the “famous three” again produced a 20 min tape recording at the Afton Hotel which has since enjoyed only one public hearing (sufficient?).

Friday: Presentation dance, more grog and sex; during the evening the Australian Varsity team was announced with Charlie Pallaghy being chosen to play left-half.

Saturday: Another wipe-out

Sunday: Several buckets containing the remains of Tasmanian soccer players were shipped trans-air back to Hobart.

As a past player and captain of Tasmania, let me conclude by saying that the memories of all three I.V’s I have attended will never be forgotten, especially of that in Adelaide last year.

If you can possibly afford it and you are picked for the I.V. squad, don’t hesitate, GO! It will be the greatest seven days you’ll ever have.

1966 ARMIDALE

Sexy sheep! Ever heard of a frigid train (clang, clang). The first and last team to beat Newcastle? A very interesting waterfall. The best of college accomodation. Early nights for the freshers (could not control their hoses). trips to the R.S.L. developed our right arm muscles. A $4.00 box of chocolates that kept us out of trouble.

I.V. 1966 PILAM PEDIVAN by Doug Clarke

New England (Armidael) , no doubt, are still talking about how they beat the team that thrashed this years champions. The champions this year were Newcastle - the first year they have attended any I.V. The team that bet them I think everybody probably knows!!

Nine teams attended I.V. this year; the notable absentee being Adelaide (still paying off last years debts!) and Newcastle attending for the first time. For the first time in many years there was no dominance by Melbourne and Sydney teams; the top six teams being very evenly matched.

Tasmania sent a team of thirteen star players to the venue, missing only Pallaghy, Hasan, Meech, Hocking and Butler from the normal first team squad. However the gaps were very ably filled by Burton, Foster, Cole, Sugden, Syed, Whitchurch and Moase.

For Tassie the series did not start too well with a 1-2 loss to Melbourne after scoring the first goal. Costly mistakes dur to the overabundance of white lines on the ground brought about our downfall. Hans swears that he hadn’t touched a drop for a couple of days and that the lines were really there. This game and the games against W.A (drawn 1-1) and New England (lost (2-3) suffered from the fact that Moase, Burton, Fuller and Prasad had not recovered from the train trip from Melbourne (Too much what?). Weeks aclimatised very quickly in his home territory and was the outstanding player in the first three games.

For the game against Newcastle a little priming was necessary. This started at the dinner the previous night, with Bill MacGillvray (??) baiting (??) Newcastle and all the other teams and continued by doing the rounds of all the Colleges to find a party at which we could stay. We were kicked out of all except Robb College (we boarded there!) but proceeded to enjoy ourselves in the “home” environment all the same. The last member to get to bed was in by 5:30am, after making sure that all others were in bed or in a condition to go to bed (he was the best player in the team at 10:30am the same morning).

When eleven bodies struggled onto the field to face Newcastle, they played so well that the last defender only touched the ball five times up until the last ten minutes of the game. Newcastle were beaten by a left-and-centre combination consisting of one Pat Sililo, who had two goals in the net before most people realised we were even on the field. The other member to play his best game of the series was Hans Steen at centre-half: he and Pat were very ably supported by Menzies (Bea-uty), Fuller, Foster, Burton and the rest of the team.

The team considered that there was no better team than us at I.V. and that we were beaten only by bad luck.

Newcastle beat N.S.W. 3-0 in the final which was notable more for the N.S.W. goalie losing a contact lens than for the soccer.

The social events of the week seemed to consist only of grog and Tassie. NO women was the lament of all. (Who’d travel 1,500 miles to Armidale, then a further 50 into the bush to drink grog without any birds?) A barbecue was made to function to any extent at all only by the efforts of Whitchurch and Fuller and a couple of other Tassie blokes who prefer to remain anonymous. The dinner was solely a Tassie plus Bill MacGillvray effort. Most of the week was spent looking for birds (Unsuccessfully), filling up the fridge, playing soccer at the R.S.L. Club and trying to get out of Armidale.

We missed the final booze-up (that b……. train!) but at a presentation beforehand two of our players were awarded positions in the Australian Universtities Representative side. They were Pat Sililo and Hans Steen.

The train trip back was as equally unexciting as the one up except that somebody missed (??) the train in Armidale and flew to Sydney to catch up with us. (He said he didn’t like travelling on the train!). He nearly missed the plane too, apparently, but made Sydney in time to see a Rugby game. Apart from the usual mixup with T.A.A. in Melbourne (They said we would have to wait until Tuesday to get a flight back to Hobart) the rest of the trip was uneventful.

University’s scratch team to play in the Inter Varsity Carnival at Adelaide leaves the State tomorrow at 4:30pm. If they had been given the early match as expected they would have been able to play Taylor and Nigel Sugden. These two will be unavailable reducing the drawing power of the match of the day.

Olympia will have their regular side out against University who will have R Jensen and Marchioli in for Taylor and N Sugden.

The University team going to the Inter Varsity Carnival in Adelaide tomorrow will be chosen from Moase (Manager), N Sugden, Armsby, Cassidy, Sloan, Hargrave, Korabatz, Prasad, Pettifer, Parr, Raza, Ramritu, Sweeney, Taylor (cap).

Their programme is – Sunday bye, Mon Tas v NSW, Tue Tas v Flinders, Wed Tas v Newcastle, Thu Tas v Macquarie.

The semi-final will be played on Thursday night and the final on Friday.

It is questionable whether a party of only 13 will stand up to the heavy programme

Fri 18 May p19

Their scratch side at the Inter varsity carnival did not win a game but three of their four defeats were by one goal.

Their results were 3-4 v Latrobe, 0-1 v Adelaide, 2-3 v Newcastle and 0-6 v NSW. Best players were Nigel Sugden, Mick Cassidy, John Sloane and Stewart Taylor.

University did not win a game at the intervarsity carnival at Adelaide but they came back with the Chen trophy for sportsmanship and appearance and Nigel Sugden made the All-Australian Varsity XI.

The team was managed by Hume Moase, their reserve goalkeeper, and they emulated the performance of the 1964 side that Frank Watson took interstate under the captaincy of Peter Leverett.

Moase was the only member of that side that went this time although Tom Steen is still a member of the Club.

In the first game University led La Trobe 3-1 with 20 minutes to go but the toll of travel proved too much and they lost 3-4. Taylor (penalty) and Prasad scored and Mick Cassidy and Stewart Taylor were their best players.

A lone goal midway through the second half cost them the game against Adelaide after they had had their chances. Adelaide had a centre-half who represented South Australia against Stoke City. Nigel played extremely well in this game in the midfield position.

They were down 0-2 early on against Newcastle and 1-2 at half-time before going further down at 1-3. Then they started to play all over their opponents and were unlucky to lose 2-3.

The game against NSW was too one sided and the ultimate winner scored six times without reply, although Sloane and Nigel played well.

Injuries had left their mark on the 13 man side by the time the game against Macquarie came up. But after being 0-1 they crossed over 2-1 up only to collapse and be beaten 6-2 with Prasad and Taylor the scorers. Sloane was outstanding in this game.

A group went into town and watched the rock opera “Tommy”. We knew we were in for a loud movie when we walked past banks of speakers taller than we were! And that night we finished off in a strip joint in St Kilda. Very boring strippers and in the end we walked out after giving a jug of beer to some other IV team.

University came back from the Inter-Varsity soccer carnival at Macquarie University, Sydney, without the premiership cup but had the Chen Cup for the best social and best turned out team and the skoaling (drinking) cup.

They beat ANU 3-0 (Banks, Mudaliar and Sloane were the scorers); lost 0-3 to Macquarie, who beat Sydney 1-0 to win the premiership in their first year as hosts; lost 1-5 to New England (S Smith); lost 1-4 to Monash (Robinson); and won 4-2 against Newcastle (Goodwin, Sloane, Pyrke and Mudaliar).

This gave them fourth place in their six-team division, the champions of which played the winners of the other division for the title.

Injuries took heavy toll, Michael Page being out in the first 15 minutes with a hamstring injury; Wayne Goninon knee cap, Simon Smith knee ligament and Colin Pidd knee.

Best players were Robert Banks, Kishmore Mudaliar and Chris Dockray.

An Australian XI to visit New Zealand in August was selected afterwards and injuries ruled out three possibilities from Uni.

A selector was Eric Worthington, Australia’s national coaching director, whose son Graham played in the Macquarie side.

Fifteen of the 16 players chosen were from NSW with the other from Queensland.

On the way back Uni lost 2-3 in a return game against South Yarra (Vic) who play in the Metropolitan League, after leading 2-1 at half time with Robinson and Phil Sumner scoring.

South Yarra will visit Uni in September to continue this series.

Next Season University will be host in the second week in May to at least nine universities at the annual carnival and already an organizing committee under Hume Moase is in operation.

They need $5,000 and the TSA will be asked for help in the provision of grounds and referees.

It is possible that 35 minutes each way will be played instead of 45 minutes as at present the winners of this carnival have to play seven games in six days and this is very exhausting.
