All About the Club

2008 TUSC Logo

This site is intended to hold the history of the Tasmania University Soccer Club (TUSC). This history includes statistics, photos, some memories, league ladders, trophies won and a lot of other data. Most was collated by Jeffrey Connolly but donations from many people has helped to put together a major part of the Club’s history. This site would not have been in existence without the work and help of Diana Reale.

A site of this sort is never finished and needs the help of those who look in to get the details correct. So if you find an error, something missing or wrong please let us know so we can get it right. If you have something which can be added please also let us know.

SOME FIRSTS FOR THE CLUB

The Tasmania University Soccer Club had its first game on Saturday the 15th April 1950 losing to South Hobart 15-1. Our goal was scored by Bill Gatehouse from the penalty spot.

We first ran out in white t-shirts but the first real strip were ex University footy guernseys and the next year a set of all yellow shirts of Proudly Empire cotton (Hong Kong).  Rod Miller has a surviving First Uni shirt and one of the  old “Blood and Gore” strip (Yellow & Red striped strip).

The Clubs first win was Saturday 17 June 1950, our sixth game, when University defeated Mount Nelson 2-1. Our Goalscorer was Malcolm Searle who scored two and best players were Jimmy Kwong, Fred Joughin and Malcolm Searle.

University players were first referred to as “the students” in The Mercury newspaper in an article on Monday the 18th July 1955.

Our first State team player was Franz Hadorn who, in July 1961, played for Tasmania against a Victorian side.

Saturday the 13th June 1970 was the first time that four Uni players scored a hat-trick on the same day. For the first team when University defeated White Eagles 6-0 Mick Scavone scored 3 goals. Southern Cross defeated Uni Gold 4-3 but Geoffrey Kitchen scored all three of our goals. Uni Grads defeated Teruna Malaysia 9-1 and Peter Groves scored 3 and so did Don Butler.

In Metropolitan Division 1 in 1970 University were the first team to score in excess of 100 goals in a season.

On Sunday 22 May 1977 the Womens team played its first games in a round robin competition. They played two games on the one day and the first game was a 0-0 draw with Metro. The second game resulted in University defeating Juventus 5-0. The scorers were Sarah Lister, Pam Hodge (2 penalties), Robyn Annear and an Own goal. Pam Hodge (now Pam Elliott) was the first woman to score a goal for the University Women’s team and this was from the penalty spot, the same way as the men’s first goal!
